Finnish Pulla Cardamom bread

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups scaled milk
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 tbsp yeast plus 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 whole eggs beaten
  • 2 tsp crushed cardamom pods ground caramom
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 7 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 whole egg beaten
  • 2 tbsp pearl sugar

Instructions
 

  • Measure milk and scald. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast and 1 tsp sugar in warm water. Add to milk.
    In a large mixer bowl, pour in the milk. Add sugar, cardamom, beaten eggs and salt. Mix well.
    Add 5 cups of flower, mix well then add the melted butter. Mix until incorporated.
    Add additional 2 cups of flour 1/2 cup at a time.
    Knead until dough is shiny and clinging to hook.
    Cover and let rise until doubled in size.
    Sprinkle some flour on the counter and dump out the dough. Divide into thirds.
    Divide each third into thirds or fourths. Roll out each piece into a long snake. Braid together. Put braid on greased pan. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with pearl sugar. Let rise 30 minutes
    Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
