It is the end of the season for Midwest Cut Flowers, 2020 what a ride! We had such a great growing season here at Midwest Cut Flowers, a special thanks to all who supported the farm.
This variety of Dahlia has been with me since the beginning of this flower farming journey! This Cornel Dahlia came from Floret Flowers. Cornel is such a good show every year plus it is also a pretty good cut for the vase.
The end of the season clean up has started. I am cutting plants at their base and tossing them into the wagon. From here they go to the compost bin and the weeds get put into a different pile. The reason plants are being cut at the base, is so the roots can breakdown and provide the soil with some organic matter. Organic matter provides nutrients and habitat to organisms living in the soil, it also binds soil particles into aggregates and improves water holding.
There is nothing like blooming spring flowers. Here are some tulips, daffodil and allium bulbs getting tucked into the garden and Lacy is trying to be a big helper here. Just an fyi Lacy was NOT a big helper.
A few more flowers are still blooming in the field, the other flowers have been cut for drying. Here is a post on dried flowers that was written at the beginning of the season. Dried flowers are making a come back….check out this pinterest board for some interesting ideas.
