how to make an olive tree

Set out all your supplies.

tree branch clipping

Using your snips, snip off a branch from a tree in your yard. Choose a branch that is fairly straight and has a few small twigs at the end of it.

Bundle of cut branches

Fill the bottom half of the pot with the clay. Press the clay firmly down with your hand. This will add weight to stabilize your pot.

Measure the opening and depth of your pot. Cut your floral foam 1/8 inch wider and 1/4 shorter than the remaining space in your pot. Press the foam firmly down into the pot insuring that the foam is snug in place.

Pressing floral foam into pot

Poke the stick down into the foam at the center pushing into the clay at the bottom. Using your hot glue gun apply hot glue around the edge of the stick to hold it firmly in place.

Stand back and look at your project, to envision how you want the branches on the twig. Snip off any limbs you do not want on the branch.

Pull apart your faux olive branch bunch.

Using one of the pieces of the olive branch, place it on one of the twigs and wrap the stems together with the brown floral tape.

Continue doing this until you have added an olive branch to all the bare limbs at the top of your branch.

pressing floral tape on a branch

Use the brown floral tape to wrap the entire stem of the branch. Press the tape firmly on the branch so you can see all the bumps of the branch. This will give it a more realistic look.

Apply hot glue to the top of the floral foam and around the edge of your pot. Carefully press pieces of moss onto the foam and be sure to cover all the floral foam. If you want, you can hot glue moss onto the main branch as well. Spray the moss with hairspray to hold it in place.
