It’s Friday! Another week gone by. Today I am going to show you a few of my favorite things. They just happen to be a few of my favorite varieties that I am planting this year. I am growing more flowers this year than I ever have…exciting and scary at the same time. That would be an oxymoron right?

Ranunculus

I am planting 5 varieties of ranunculus this season. These were by far my most expensive flowers. Ranunculus have a great vase life. What is vase life? It is just the way it sounds. It is how long a flower will last after it has been harvested. The longer the vase life the better right? These have an average vase life of approximately 10 days! Incredible for a beautiful bloom. So far they are doing exactly what I want them to do and are sprouting and most of them are under the grow lights… cross your fingers.  Here is a previous blog post about how to plant ranunculus.

Craspedia

Most of my flower seeds come from Johnny’s Selected Seeds. Like the ranunculus, Craspedia otherwise known as billy balls, have a long vase life. These little guys fall into my everlasting category. They make an incredible dried flower. I have some that are 3 years old and still look great. I quadrupled my quantity of this variety this year….One thing that I will do different in the field with these is net them. They grew so tall last year and had a hard time standing on their own.

These pretty ladies are so delicate. I am hoping to succession plant these every 2 weeks during the growing season. These beauties prefer to be direct planted and not have their roots disturbed, so the first bunch will be put out as transplants but the others will be direct planted.

Oh sweet carnation….yes I am planting these “old fashioned guys” and yes the vase life is amazing. Some varieties germinated great and some not so great.  I am planning on a fabulous season with these honey’s..
